ISO refers to International Organization for Standardization. Here, we will discuss ISO 14001 Certification which is about Environmental Management.

ISO makes sure that the quality of the products and their services can be trusted because they’re safe. Did you know that ISO has its own 21000 International Standards? Well, it does. And did you know about ISO ‘s technical committee?

The panel of experts that are present on the technical committee develop the ISO standards. They make drafts first and then the votes and comments are given by all the members that are shareholders or consumer associations etc. After proper analysis of the draft, if all the members agree on it, then only it becomes an official ISO standard.

The members of the committee can be consumer associations, various NGOs or the Govt itself. This means the experts are from different parts of the world! The consumer groups request the standards to be taken into consideration and then the idea becomes the draft, all the views from different shareholders and other experts are analyzed to make the standard finally develop.

ISO’s headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO sets standards and the members who are representing standards who are from a national standards organization.


The ISO 14000 standards provide ways to the organizations and the companies so that they would be able to fulfill their environmental responsibilities. It is a requirement for all the companies on morality and the ethics’ level in order to fulfill all the social responsibilities of which the  Environmental responsibility is a part of.

ISO 10014:2006 also provides guidelines for realizing that the financial and the economic benefits from the application of the ISO 9000 quality management principles.

ISO 10014:2006 is also directed to the top management of an organization and it also complements ISO 9004 for its performance improvements. It also provides examples of the achievable benefits and also identifies management methods and the tools that are available in order to assist with the achievement of those benefits.

ISO 10014:2006 consists of the guidelines and the recommendations, and is not intended for the certification, regulatory or for contractual use.

The standard of ISO 10014  is thus based on the process approach and also a Plan-Do-Check-Act model of the ISO 9000:2000 series. It thus examines the eight quality management principles which are underlying the series and it also describes how the implementation of them can achieve financial and economic benefits. It is designed to be as practical as its subject, the standard thus includes a self-assessment as a gap of the analysis tool.

This ISO standard set up norms for an environmental management system that has to be followed by the companies in order to maintain the efficiency of a management system! A company irrespective of its size has to follow these norms in order to utilize resources to its full capacities. It will also lead to the set up of a great environment for all the staff members to work in. Plus, to improve the environmental impact it is measured and improvised.

The aspects of a business that will have a positive or negative impact on the environment, irrespective of the size of the business are measured and then controlled so that the outer environment won’t get badly affected or harmed in any way.

ISO 14001:2015

ISO 14001:2015 sets out the criteria for the environmental management system. It brings out a regulatory framework that a company or organization may follow to make an effective environmental management system. It can be chosen by any organization regardless of its activity or sector.

Using ISO 14001:2015 can provide assurance about environmental impact is being measured and improved to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders that ISO certification can be gained by filing an ISO application for the applicable certification standard.

This ISO standard can help in reducing waste and carbon footprint that further helps in lowering the environmental liability on the company.
